INERT DEACTIVATED. This is a rare British unfired N96 Mark 6 Ferranti Limited type proximity nose fuse used in all British Post-war anti-aircraft guns over 4 inches calibre. The proximity fuse was developed during WW2 by the British and consists of a radio transmitter, receiver, battery and firing mechanism in a standard nose fuse. The fuse was developed for mass production by the Americans who had a vast research and manufacturing capacity at that time. The fuses become pivotal during WW2 in the battle of the V1 rockets in southern England and against the Japanese Kamikaze aircraft in the Pacific campaign. This Proximity fuse consists of an all steel body with a white plastic nosecone. The fuse is stamped N97 MK6 MOD 4 round the top under a dark green painted band and E.M.I. 3/68 LOT 45 L: and a crowfoot above the screw threads. The base cavity of the fuse has a brass clockwork delay timer to self-destruct the fuse if the proximity fuse malfunctioned or if it missed its target. The fuse is complete with its pressed steel quick release fuse nose protector. The grey protector has a dark green tip and is stencilled in white round its circumference EME LOT N97 MK6. The cap is further stencilled in black round its circumference NES N7 MK 4 BN LOT 76.
