A very rare 17th Century English Mortuary basket hilt Sword with a wide blade. This type of sword was carried during the English Civil War circa 1642-1651. Oliver Cromwell is known to have carried a similar Mortuary style basket hilt sword. The Steel basket guard chisseled with faces representing King Charles the first of England. The blade in very good condition. Large lobed chisseled iron pommel with three bars from the guard fixed with screws. Blade length 31 inches. Overall length 38 inches. The grip wire and turks-heads are complete and are still in good condition. A good honest completely untouched piece. After the execution of King Charles the First in 1649, basket-hilt swords were made which depicted the face or death mask of the "martyred" king on the hilt. These swords came to be known as Mortuary swords. Mortuary swords have now become extremely difficult to find. Ref 3306.nown to have seen service during in Europe during the Napoleonic wars 1795-1815, as well as during the American Revolutionary Wars circa 1775- 1783. Ref 3305.
