A fine English brass barrelled flintlock pistol made by by Bass of London. Circa 1775-1794. Engraved on the lock-plate with the makers name Bass. John Bass (1761–1794) was in partnership with his uncle the renowned gunmaker, John Twigg from 1788 until Twigg’s death in 1790. He then traded under his own name from 1790 until 1794. The 9 inch brass barrel engraved London and struck with two London proof marks. Brass butt cap, side plate, ramrod pipes and trigger guard. Brass oval escutcheon to the grip. Complete with its original brass tipped wooden ramrod. Some very minor dings and scratches to the stock otherwise in good condition. Action in good working order. Overall length 16 inches. This it the type of pistol that was carried during the Napoleonic Peninsular wars as well as during the American Revolutionary war fought against the British. (April 1775 – Sept 1783). Brass barrelled pistols such as this were often carried on board ship during the 18th-19th century as the brass barrel afforded some protection against the ravages of the sea.
