Circa 1859-1868. The Manhattan Fire Arms Manufacturing Co. was founded by a group of New Jersey businessmen in 1856. Their goal was to take advantage of Colt’s patent for revolving firearms that was due to expire in 1857. The founders hired Thomas Bacon to become the Superintendent of Manufacturing. The company first began in Norwich, Connecticut and in 1859 moved to Newark, New Jersey. The 6.5 inch octagonal blued barrel marked with the address Manhattan Fire Arms Co MFG. CO New York. The cylinder clearly displaying the five scenes within ovals panels with military and naval scenes. All matching serial numbers, serial number indicates that this is the first series produced and with a rare 6.5 inch barrel makes this particular model very scare indeed. Action in good working order. The barrel retaining much of it's original blue and the cylinder scene is very clear. In extremely good overall condition with a few minor dings and scratches during it's working life. A fine example of a civil war era first production Manhattan percussion revolver with a 6.5 inch barrel. Ref 3863.This is an obsolete antique item and is sold as a collectors item only.
