An exceptional condition approx .45 calibre cased double action percussion revolver engraved on the top strap Robert Adams 76 King William Street, London. This revolver was manufactured Circa 1851-1856. After the Great Exhibition of 1851, held in the purpose-built Crystal Palace in Hyde Park a wider selection of percussion revolvers became available and many officers purchased their own firearms to take with them to the Crimean war. The British Adams revolvers were some of the most popular due to the fact that it could fire five shots rapidly and available in a range of calibres. Captain Joshua Crosse of the 88th Regiment of Foot (Connaught Rangers) who used the largest calibre Adams revolver during the Crimean War (1854-56). Wrote to its inventor, Robert Adams, following the Battle of Inkermann (1854). Where he was wounded and surrounded by Russians quoted " I then found the advantages of your pistol over that of Colonel Colt's, for had I needed to cock the revolver before each shot I should have lost my life. With yours, having only to pull the trigger, I was able to shoot four Russians, therefore save my life. I should not have had time to cock each time, for they were too close to me, being only a few yards away. So close that I was bayoneted through the thigh immediately after shooting the fourth man". The frame marked with Adams patent No.41011. London proof marks, sliding safety bolt locks cylinder, side lever rammer and chequered walnut grip. British military War Department WD and broad arrow ownership stamp on the frame. In very good overall condition retaining much of its original blued finish. Action in good working order. Complete in an oak case, with a Wm & Jas Kavanagh, Gun & pistol Manufactures, No 12 Dame Street, Dublin paper trade label. Complete with Bullet mould, copper powder flask, pewter oil bottle and other accessories. This was the type of weapon carried around the time of the Crimean war. An excellent example of a superb Adams percussion revolver in its original oak case complete with accessories. Overall length 12 inches. Case measurements 14 x 7 x 2.5 inches. Ref 3950.
