A William Lund appears C1836 listed as a fine cutlery maker at 24 Fleet Street, London. Apparently by 1852 these 2 businesses had been amalgamated under the name William Lund. When William died in 1872 the firm passed to Charles Lund with addresses at 57 Cornhill & 23 & 24 Fleet Street. By 1901 the Fleet Street property was no longer in use. The company continued working through to 1920 under various names and subsequently traded as jewellers C1937 to 1964 at 54 Old Broad Street London (see pages 103 to 105 of the London Knife Book by Flook). This is an excellent Bowie Knife made by Lund at their Fleet Street address. It has a 7” long steel Bowie blade which has just small areas of staining consistent with age. The knife measures 11 ¾” overall. One side of the blade is crisply marked ‘Lund Fleet St London’. It has a steel cross guard and attractive, undamaged, curved Stag horn handle with German Silver pommel cap inscribed with stylised monogram. The Bowie has its original brown leather scabbard. The rear of the scabbard has a stitched seam. The throat has a German Silver mount with frog stud and retaining clip which fastens over the cross guard of the Bowie and holds it firmly in the scabbard when sheathed. The retaing bar is crisply marked ‘Lund Fleet St London’. The scabbard also has a German Silver Chape. All stitching & leather of the scabbard are intact. The price for this excellent well marked Victorian Bowie & scabbard includes UK delivery. Sn 16623:1
