Plug bayonets were designed as a last resort when the user had run out of gunpowder or bullets. The circular hardwood grip tapers towards the pommel and has a distinct swelling before the neck of the hilt. This swelling allows the user to ‘plug’ the muzzle of a weapon when low on ammunition. Plug bayonets were used by the British military after the middle years of the 17th century until they were replaced with the socket bayonet in the early 18th century.
