An Imperial German Seitengewehr (side arm for the rifle) M1871 bayonet for the 1871 Mauser Rifle by P.D. Luneschloss Solingen with scabbard and frog (see page 116 item 245 and page 113 of The Bayonet Book by John Watts and Peter White). The bayonet has brass grips, smooth on one side and grooved on the reverse. The smooth side is stamped with imperial inspection mark. The hilt has a push button release for the bayonet which operates smoothly. The cross guard has Regiment mark ’73.R.E.4.111’. The blade is manufacturer marked ‘P.D. Luneschloss Solingen’. The clean single edged steel blade with fullers measures 18 ½” length ( 23 ½” overall). The spine has Imperial inspection mark above ‘73’ date (1873). The scabbard is leather and has a brass throat mount with frog bar and brass chape with ball end. The throat mount and frog bar have Imperial inspection marks. The frog bar has Regiment mark ’84.R.8.186’. The scabbard is fitted with original period leather frog with belt loop and retaining strap with brass buckle. All of the frog’s original copper rivets are present. The rear of the belt loop has impressed indistinct numbers. The frog has areas of service wear but all stitching is intact.
