An Imperial German Seitengewehr (side arm for the rifle) M1871 bayonet for the 1871 Mauser Rifle by Simson & Co Suhl with scabbard (see page 116 item 245 and page 113 of The Bayonet Book by John Watts and Peter White). The bayonet has brass grips, smooth on one side and grooved on the reverse. The smooth side is stamped with imperial inspection mark. The hilt has a push button release for the bayonet which operates smoothly. The blade is manufacturer marked ‘Simson & Co Suhl’. The single edged steel blade with fullers measures 18 ½” length ( 23 ½” overall). The blade has its original leather hilt washer. The spine has Imperial inspection mark above ‘93’ date (1893). The scabbard is leather and has a brass throat mount with frog bar and brass chape with ball end. The throat mount has Regiment mark ’78.A.5.11 (most likely 78th Battery 5th Artillery Regiment, Weapon 11). All leather & stitching is intact. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 23464 (German box 2)
