This is an original BSA Standard No.2 Pattern 4th Series ‘S’ Prefix Serial Number .22 Calibre Underlever Air Rifle. The BSA standard pattern No.2 air rifles were introduced in 1919 with variants being made through to 1935. This is a 4th series variant made between 1930 & 1935 (see Chapter 16& page 126 of ‘The Book Of BSA Air Rifles 1905-1939’ by Milewski). This example of the improved model has its original wood stock with pistol stock and correct chequered BSA panels at the wrist. It has a ribbed butt with trap (the butt has knocks bumps and bruises consistent with age and use. It has a 19 ½” barrel and measures 45 ¼” overall. It has a blade for sight and adjustable dial rear sight. The metal work has original blue finish faded with age in areas. There are no visible cylinder markings. The rifle is serial number ‘S 54561’ which is correctly stamped on the lower section of the trigger block as found on 4th series examples. The correct ‘S’ prefix number is also in the range for 4th series examples (see page 126 of the author’s book). The rifle cocks, loads & fires with a strong spring action.
