1st Type 1907 pattern bayonets with hook quillon were introduced in 1908, after 1913, ‘07’ Pattern bayonets were produced without hook quillon (see page 186 of British & Commonwealth Bayonets by Skennerton). In WW1 The British Middlesex Regiment expanded dramatically from 4 regular battalions into 46 battalions, engaging in major campaigns on the Western Front, in the Middle East, and in Mesopotamia. This is an excellent, original 1st year of production, 1st type hook quillon 1907 pattern sword bayonet Regiment marked to the Middlesex Regiment with correct, original 1st pattern scabbard & 1914 Pattern leather frog. The sword bayonet has a 17” steel single edged blade with fullers which is stamped at the ricasso on one side with the King’s Crown ’9 ’08 date (September 1908) and ‘1907’ (Pattern) together with ‘Sanderson’ manufacturer’s name (one of the rarer makers). The reverse is stamped with WD inspection marks. The bayonet is fitted with 1st pattern hook quillon cross guard which incorporates a muzzle ring. The grips are secured with the correct two screw bolts. The pommel is faintly stamped ‘MX’ to the Middlesex Regiment above indistinct numbers (illustrated). The bayonet is complete with its original steel mounted brown leather 1st Pattern scabbard. The scabbard has the correct rear seam & internal chape with just the metal tip showing. The leather is impressed with WD arrow inspection marks and matching ’08 (1908) date. The scabbard is fitted with its correct original 6 rivet 1914 pattern leather frog with retaining strap and brass buckle. The rear of the frog is impressed with 1915 date and maker detail which looks like ‘Vicary & Son, Burton Abbot’. The leather also has a faint number which looks like '116'. All the stitching and leather of the scabbard & frog are clean & intact. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 23632
