Pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) air rifles are powered by an onboard reservoir of compressed air, typically charged to 200–300 bar using a hand pump, dive bottle or dedicated compressor. Unlike spring or CO2 rifles, PCPs deliver consistent muzzle energy across an entire charge, giving shot-to-shot accuracy that makes them the preferred choice for UK hunters and field target competitors.
PCP air rifles producing under 12ft/lb at the muzzle require no firearms licence in England, Wales and Scotland; those producing over 12ft/lb are Section 1 firearms requiring a Firearms Certificate (FAC).
Leading PCP brands on the UK market include Weihrauch, Air Arms, FX, BSA, Daystate, Brocock and Hatsan. When viewing a used PCP, check reservoir pressure rating and seal condition, ask when it was last serviced, and confirm whether the regulator, if fitted, has been tested recently. A professional inspection from a registered dealer is advisable on any rifle over two years old.
