UK Law: Two-Tone Guns vs Realistic Imitation Firearms (RIFs)
Airsoft guns in the UK are sold as either Two-Tone or RIF. Two-Tone guns are painted at least 51% in a bright non-military colour and can be bought by anyone aged 18 or over with no additional requirements. RIFs look like real firearms and can only be sold to buyers who are active members of a UKARA-registered skirmish site, or can demonstrate another qualifying reason under the VCRA (Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006). Sellers are legally required to verify your defence before transferring a RIF, and will ask for your UKARA number or equivalent evidence.
What to check
For AEGs (Automatic Electric Guns), confirm the gearbox cycles correctly on both semi and full-auto and ask about battery condition. For gas blowback guns, check the pistol holds gas and seals properly across multiple shots. Leaking seals are the most common issue on used GBBs. Inspect the hop-up rubber and inner barrel, as these wear with use and affect accuracy. Ask the seller whether any internal parts have been upgraded or replaced, as this affects both value and compatibility with accessories.
