Nazi Luftwaffe Major Hans Hahn had been with the JG2 Richthofen since the beginning of WW2 and had been leading at first the 4th Staffel, later from October 1940 to November 1942 the IIIrd Gruppe. On 21-2-1943 because of engine trouble he had to force land behind the Russian lines and was a POW for the next 7 years which did not dampen his infectious ‘joie de vivre’. Total 560 missions, 108 confirmed victories, 36 unconfirmed victories. This information is documented in a research leaflet which accompanies the cap and can be seen in image 1. The leaflet has a copy of a period portrait of the Officer in Uniform. This is Major Hahn’s superb original Nazi German Luftwaffe Officer’s visor cap (Luftwaffe cap variations and insignia are illustrated in Chapter 5 of ‘The Collector’s Guide To Cloth Third Reich Military Headgear’ by Wilkins). Made of Fliegerblau (Flier’s Blue) material it has the correct ribbed black Rayon headband. The front of the cap is mounted with the correct bullion Luftwaffe Eagle with Swastika & Winged Oak Leaves wreath with central National Cockade Badge. The material has no mothing or damage and is clean. The cap has a patent leather visor and bullion rope straps secured to white metal bosses. The cap has its original leather sweatband and cloth liner. The liner and sweatband have minor service wear & it retains its original clear cellophane panel on the crown. Beneath the panel are ink stamped ‘1940’ date and size ‘57’ (UK Size 7). There are no visible maker marks. The inside of the sweatband is ink marked with the famous fighter pilot’s name ‘H. Hahn’.
