**RARE**Boer War Era Recovered 1901 Waterberg Transvaal (South Africa) Inscribed Solid Bronze Boer Artillery Gunner’s Black Powder Mortar. Sn 23534 In 1901, the Waterberg district—located in the northern region of the Transvaal Republic (South African Republic)—was a critical, rugged theatre of guerrilla warfare during the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902). As British forces captured major towns and severed rail lines, the vast, mountainous Waterberg terrain became a primary stronghold for the surviving Boer commandos. This is rare to find original Solid Bronze Boer Artillery Gunner’s Black Powder Mortar recovered at Waterberg Transvaal. These large mortars made of solid bronze to prevent sparks when in use were used by artillery gunner’s to grind coarse black powder used in the barrel of a cannon barrel into fine black powder suitable for charging the priming vent which was ignited to fire the cannon. The mortar without pestle is inscribed ‘1901 Waterberg Transvaal’. The mortar weighs a hefty 1.130 Kgs. The opening of the bowl is 5” diameter and it is 4” height.
