Although often found in collections of Third Reich militaria, this inscription commemorates a First World War unit, of the WW1 fighter ace Jagdgeschwader Schlageter. Jagdgeschwader 26 Schlageter (JG 26) was a famous Luftwaffe fighter wing of the Third Reich. The unit was named after Albert Leo Schlageter (1894-1923), a German nationalist WW1 veteran and Freicorps member who was elevated to martyr status by Nazi propaganda after he was executed by the French for sabotage. This official war-commemorative band (Kriegserinnerungsband) were produced and worn during the Third Reich era by Luftwaffe personnel to honour historic German flying units and traditions. This is a rare, un-issued, original WW2 era Luftwaffe Enlisted man’s & NCO’s cuff title. The dark material and quality gold embroidered wording “Jagdgeschwader Schlageter” which translates roughly as “Fighter Wing Schlageter “ are clean and intact.
