John Barlow managed reloading tools for the Winchester Repeating Arms Co, which famously packed basic tong tools with their rifles. Barlow left Winchester to join the Ideal Tool Co. where production of innovative combination tools and bullet moulds began around 1885. The No. 4 Ideal Reloading Tool was the Classic, tool produced by Ideal. It was offered from about 1884 until about 1936. The tools cast a bullet and reloaded a Cartridge. These are very popular tools, it is complete in itself, no extra pieces to get lost or carry, it performs all the operations required, as constructed, it moulds the bullet a trifle above the standard size, which after they are lubricated can be forced through the sizing die which packs the grease firmly in the grooves, removes the surplus and makes the bullet perfectly round and of the correct diameter. The value of this is appreciated by those who make their own ammunition. This example is in very good fully functioning condition. The tool is signed by the manufacturer and has calibre & 1884 patent detail (although not numbered this is no doubt The ideal No.4 model.
