Description

This is one of the iconic gothic hilted British army swords. The 1822 dress regulations mandated the introduction of a new sword, to replace the 1803 flank officer’s sabre and the spadroon bladed 1796 line infantry officer’s sword. This consisted of a flat, un-fullered, single edged blade with a straighter rod running along the back of the blade, with a ‘false-edge’ being formed on the back edge near to the tip, sometimes described as a ‘quill-point’. The gilded brass, ‘half-basket’ hilt features the characteristic Gothic outline, with the monarch’s monogram formed in the guard.

This sword has an 82cm blade (approx) and a total length of 95cm.

*Condition*

This sword is in good condition with a strong and undamaged hilt. The blade has some patches of pitting which become more severe towards the tip but large areas of the decoration and original finish remain. Please see pictures for more detail.
