This is a British 1853 pattern socket bayonet and scabbard for the pattern 3 band Enfield rifle and the later Snider conversions. These bayonets had a long service ife and were in use from 1853 until 1878, long after the introduction of the Snider breech loading system in 1866. The blade measures 17 184 inches long with an overall length of 20 ½ inches. The blade is stamped on the ricasso with a crown B 44. The leather scabbard is fitted with a brass locket with a round frog stud and chape retained by brass staples. The leather, stitching and metalwork on the scabbard are all in excellent condition.
