British, 1903 Pattern, (Not Converted) Bayonet by Sanderson, Sheffield and Scabbard. BAYO 377 Bayonet

In the 1902 financial year, 375 each of the short and long experimental models were made for trials. The short model was a trials version of the eventual pattern. It was the short version that was eventually decided upon for introduction with the new short rifle (SMLE). Provisionally approved on 14th December 1902, the pattern 1903 sword bayonet was announced in the list of changes para, 11716 with an approval date of 19th December. Made at Enfield (unconverted) the blade length is 12 inches with an overall length of 16 ½ inches. the ricasso is stamped 1903 (in large numbers for the pattern) & SANDERSON SHEFFIELD. The other side of the ricasso is stamped 16/21 x and a crowfoot over the Indian I service stamp. The wooden grips are in excellent condition and are held with two steel screw bolts as opposed to the brass fittings of the pattern 1888 bayonet. See British and Commonwealth Bayonets by Ian D.
