An excellent European officer’s small sword of late 18th to early 19th century date, reflecting the transitional style between the classical smallsword and early sabre forms associated with the Napoleonic period. The hilt is of gilt brass, richly cast and chased with neoclassical ornament throughout. The knuckle bow features scrolling foliage and relief detailing. The oval shell guard is prominently decorated in relief with a recumbent lion on martial arms within an ornamental border, a motif consistent with late 18th century classical symbolism. The pommel is similarly embellished with classical decoration. The hilt is undamaged mother of Pearl in fluted form bound by foliate tooled gilt brass straps. The overall hilt design demonstrates high-quality workmanship typical of officer-grade or court dress weapons. The straight blade is faintly etched on both sides with foliate panels and Crowns & ornamental trophies consistent with period officer’s blades. The spine is signed by the German maker ‘J.J. Runkel Solingen’. The triangular section blade has no damage and is 32“ length. The blade has its original leather hilt washer. The sword is 37” overall length. This light dress small sword would have been carried primarily for dress, status, and ceremonial / court purposes. The original undamaged ebonised wood scabbard has gilt brass mounts. The throat mount has a foliate form frog locket, tooled decoration and single hanging ring. The chape has tooled foliate decoration.
