DEACTIVATED INERT. This is a British bras cartridge case off the 6 inch quick firing coast gun used for coastal defence prior to the First World War and during the war to arm naval vessels and continued its service life in until the end of World War 2. The gun was introduced into service in 1894 and replaced earlier bagged charged guns. The projectile was loaded ahead of the separate cartridge case and rammed in and the cartridge case loaded behind. The case had a separate screw in brass primer with a shoulder which was used to extract the fired cartridge case. This cartridge case is headstamped with a KN monogram (Kings Norton Metals) III* C.F.F ( the case was loaded and reloaded a second time) A in a circle ( the case was annealed twice) 2 a crowfoot N 98 (February 1898 date for naval use). the case is also stamped DH. The cartridge case has the correct lip crimps on the case mouth to hold the top wad. See British Artillery Weapons and Ammunition 1914 – 1918 by Ian Hogg and Les Thurston pages 140 - 141.
