This is a scarce unfired British WW2 1944 dated 17pr (76.2 x 583R) Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot/Trace (APDS/T) round for the British 17pr tank gun, used in the Sherman Firefly, Archer converted from the Valentine tank, Achilles and the American M10 / M10A1 tanks. It was also used in17 Pdr towed anti-tank gun. This armour piercing projectile was also used in the 77mm HV (High Velocity) gun in the Comet Tank. The APDS/T (Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot/Trace) projectile, introduced into service in 1944 consists of a tungsten core sheathed in steel, fitted inside a light alloy sabot or sheath. Upon firing, the sabot is discarded and the reduced calibre projectile carries on to the target. This black painted projectile has a blue tip and a red band underneath. The projectile is stamped AP/T 19PR 77MM JMB 5/45 (May 1945 date). The projectile has the following coloured rings at the tip white over red over blue over white. The cartridge case is headstamped a 17PR II ECC (Elswick Cartridge Company) 1944 (1944 date) LOT794 CF (Cordite Full Charge). The brass percussion primer is stamped Q III HG 30Y 3.750 CY (RoF Chorley) 6-44 (June 1944 date). The APDS/T round was issued from August 1944.
