DEACTIVATED INERT. This is a scarce unfired British WW2 1944 dated 17pr (76.2 x 583R) High Explosive/Trace (HE/T) round for the British 17pr tank gun, used in the Sherman Firefly, Archer converted from the Valentine tank, Achilles and the American M10 / M10A1 tanks. The round was also used in17 Pdr towed anti-tank gun. This High Explosive/Trace (HE/T) was used in both the tank and anti-tank gun in limited quantity. The steel projectile has two copper driving bands and a brass percussion nose fuse. the projectile retains some of its original yellow painted finish below the driving bands and is stamped round its circumference 17 PR 77MM IIT F S (Forged Steel) LOT 15 7/44 (July 1944). The base of the projectile has a spigot for holding the trace element. The brass number 257 nose fuse is complete with its arming shutter and is stamped round its circumference 257 I T.G.C. 4AB. The brass cartridge case is headstamped a 17PR II RLB (Royal Laboratories) 1943 (1943 date) LOT366 CF (Cordite Full Charge). The brass percussion primer is stamped 9 III FY).
