G. Wostenholm Washington Works Sheffield Eng., together with ‘I*XL’ trade mark Knive

Victorian English George Wostenholm Washington Works Sheffield I*XL Bowie Knife With Stag Horn Scales & Leather Sheath. ED 2449 - ED 2449

In 1826 the renowned Rockingham Street & Washington Works, Sheffield Knife maker George Wostenholm was admitted as a freeman of the Cutler's Company and was granted the now world famous 'I*XL' trademark which was an old trademark originally granted to W.A. Smith in 1787(see pages 295-303 of The Sheffield Knife Book By Tweedale). This is an excellent Victorian, Hand Made, George Wostenholm & Son , Washington Works Sheffield I*XL Bowie Knife. It has undamaged stag horn scales & oval German Silver cross guard. The stag horn scales are undamaged and secured by pins. It has a 153mm long single edged, Bowie blade, marked by the manufacturer ‘G. Wostenholm Washington Works Sheffield Eng’ together with ‘I*XL’ trade mark. Its original open topped brown leather sheath has an integral belt loop to the rear (the stitching at the top of the belt loop has become detached at some point in its life but could easily be replaced).
