This is an Imperial German, WW1, model 1844/98 sawback bayonet made by Gerr. Heller at Marienthal and accepted at the Erfurt Arsenal for the Gew 98 service rifle. The ricasso is stamped on the left hand side GEBR. HELLER MARINETHAL and on the right hand side ERFURT. There is a letter G stamped on the top of the crossguard. The bayonet has a flash guard and is fitted with wooden grips held on by cross screws. The hilt retains much of its original blued finish. The bayonet is contained in its steel scabbard with a leather frog and a knot. The knot colours from the top are blue, red and blue.
