INERT DEACTIVATED. The 51mm high explosive mortar bomb was used by the British Army from 1980 until about 2007 having replaced the old 2 inch mortar in army service. This L16A1 Illuminating mortar retains much of its original white painted finish and is stencilled in black on the body 51MM M ILLUM L16A1 the illuminating sign GD 08/99 (October 1999 date) 00GB round its circumference. The mortors propelling cartridge is headstamped L6A1 ILLUM GD 11/97 (November 1997 date) 008 . The 51mm mortar was replaced in service by the 60mm mortar.
