Description

INERT DEACTIVATED. This is a British whale tracking dart which was introduced after 1923 by the Discovery Committee. The darts were used by the RSS Discovery to research the diminishing whale population. The darts were fired by a 12 bore shotgun and the date and location recorded. If the whale was harpooned and caught, the dart would be recovered and sent to the Discovery Committee. All the darts were serial numbered and this one is numbered 46793. The dart is engraved 46793 REWARD FOR RETURN TO DISCOVERY BRITISH MUSEUM (NAT. HISTORY) LONDON AND 46793, the serial number. When recovered dart was returned to the Discovery Committee, the reward would be given. The dart is complete with its original 12 bore cartridge case which is headstamped FIOCHHI ITALY 12. The dart is mounted on a red baize covered board and is complete with its original label. The price includes UK delivery and no licence is required to possess this inert dart in the U.K. if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 19887
