INERT DEACTIVATED. This is an WW1, German, 1915 dated 77mm (77x229R) shrapnel round fitted with a DoppZ C/96 n/A alloy nose fuse. These shells were called 'whizz bang' in the trenches due to the made by shells fired from the German 77mm field guns, the 7.7 cm Feldkanone 96 nA (neuer Art) and the upgraded 7.7 cm Feldkanone 16 (FK16). The brass cartridge has 2 crimping grooves at the neck and is headstamped FN in a circle St 116 JULI 1917 (July 1917 date) HL27. The projectile retains much of its original blue painted finish and has three crimping rings machined at the bottom and carries inspection marks on the base. is fitted with an alloy and steel DoppZ C/96 n/A time fuze which is graduated to 52. With the condition of this round especially retaining some of its original blue painted finish, this round was probably brought back home as a souvenir by a soldier from the front.
