Late 18thC, a 16 bore, percussion pistol which was probably converted from a Flintlock- this was known as a 'Manstopper' due to its high stopping power. The lock plate is showing engraved scrollwork and it's possible to make out it's makers name- 'Rigby'- this would be the renowned London gunsmith John Rigby, who although originally from Dublin moved his premises to London in the 1860's- his skill and workmanship made him a highly sought after gunsmith of the day (the company is still trading to this day) The percussion hammer holds in half and full cock and will fire only when in full cock. Brass trigger guard and butt cap, and the captive swivel ramrod runs in a brass ramrod tube. A fine piece, with everything in perfect working order.
