7.92x57 Mauser Kar98a Karabiner

An opportunity to buy a rare and greatly sought-after Stoßtrupp Mauser that was highly likely to have seen plenty of action during the major German Offensives from March to June, 1918 in the hands of a Stoßtrupp/Sturmtrupp soldier on the Western Front.

This Karabiner was taken from the Western Front, in 1918, by Scottish soldiers returning home at the war's end, and remained in Glasgow until it was surrendered to Glasgow police (together with several hundred rounds of, live, 7.92mm ammunition!) around 10 years', or so, ago.

It was bought by a dealer in Shropshire from whom I, subsequently, bought this lovely Karabiner.

Whatever happened to the Mauser between 1918 and, almost, a century later, is anyone's guess - as is the identity of the soldiers who brought home this illicit trophy from the Western Front.

Nowadays, this Mauser is entirely legal, having been through the necessary police checks, prior to being released for public sale, over 10 years' ago.

The method used to smuggle such trophies home was ingenious and, relatively, simple.

Known as "Duffle-Cut", the metal parts were dismantled and the stock was then carefully cut-in-two (laterally) across the left-hand grip section.

For shipping back to "Blighty", the sections (metal, as well as wood) were then divided-up between two, sometimes three or, even four, enterprising comrades and deposited into their respective duffle-bags. This was, clearly, successful - as this beauty will testify to.

Once back home (in this case, Glasgow) the "Dufflers" would get back together and organise the skilful reassembly of the entire Karabiner (in all its glory and full working order - plus the ammo).

To ensure that the stock was solid and secure, a leather gasket was fitted in the restored joint and a small steel bracket, secured with two screws, positioned in the finger groove, below the barrel.

I can attest to the strength and security of this very skilful reassembly/restoration of this Mauser (carried out almost a century ago) - it has, indeed, stood the test-of-time.

It has a beautiful bolt-action and, I am informed, is very accurate.

The rifling is extremely good.

This marvellous, and unusual, Kar98 would be a must for any connoisseur-collector of 20th century gems.
