This is an original British RN sword & dirk collection to a distinguished WW2 RN Commander. Commander Caton served with the RN between 1939 & 1961. A dossier of documents accompanying the sword detail his service history including courses he participated in. There are 2 copies of images of ships he commanded HMS Sparrow 1949 and HMS Fortune 1940. There are also photographs of Naval officer’s in uniform and a group photo of Officers and men on the deck of HMS Diamond (it is uncertain if Commander Caton is included in any of the photos). The Naval Officer’s sword has an 80cm long blade faintly etched with foliate panels and Kings crown. There is no visible manufacturer mark. It has an attractive Lion’s head pommel and the knuckle guard features King’s crown and RN motif. The ricasso has the inlaid ordnance acceptance roundel and star. The sword’s fish skin grip with wire binding is undamaged. One side of the guard has a folding langet. The langet is signed ‘ROE Caton RN’. The sword is without scabbard. The leather sword belt is in excellent condition and is gold leaf marked by the manufacturer ‘Gieves’. The belt has the correct RN buckle and hanging straps with clips. The Dirk has a 46cm steel single edged straight blade marked Gieves. The blade is crisply etched King’s Crown and fouled anchor. It has a Lions head with mane pommel and grip strap, cross guard with acorn finials & King’s crown Royal Navy Crown and fouled anchor device. One side of the guard is holed for scabbard retaining clip on the scabbard throat which holds the sword securely in place. The dirk’s fish skin grip with wire binding is undamaged. The dirk is complete with its black leather scabbard which has brass mounts and 2 hanging rings. The scabbard is inscribed ‘ROEC’ to Commander Caton. The dirk’s leather belt is in excellent condition and is gold leaf marked by the manufacturer ‘Gieves’. The belt has the correct RN buckle and hanging straps with clips.
