This is a nice example of one of many Pellet Air Rifles used for training during the Pre-WWII Era in Germany, designed by the Oscar Will von Mars Repetier-Luftgewehr (Repeating Air Rifle) Company. These were available in two sizes, the smaller "MARS 100" and full size "MARS 115". The Mars pellet rifles closely resemble a scaled-down Mauser Model 98k, which would become Germany’s standard-issue Bolt-Action rifle in 1935. It would then be the standard German infantry service rifle throughout WWII. The Mars company went out of business after World War II, as with many other companies. The military appearance was purposely built to mimic the aesthetics of Germany’s standard-issue military service rifle, the Mauser K98k but in smaller form and were most notably used by Nazi Hitler Youth groups for training to teach basic marksmanship, safe gun handling and bolt-action manipulation before moving on to full bore firearms. Although there are no visible German maker marks or MARS designation on this example, it has similar features to the MARS 100 model. It has a full-length wooden stock and a Mauser-style wing safety catch at the rear of the bolt. Unlike standard break-barrel spring guns, these rifles use a unique bolt-action cocking system. It is gravity fed from an internal magazine & fires 4.4mm lead round balls (No. 4 lead balls only, not for steel BBs or traditional shaped pellets, as steel will cause jams and could cause internal damage). Because of their direct connection to WW2 history, surviving models are sought after by militaria and vintage airgun collectors. Our example is in excellent condition with all original un-damaged metal work and wood. It has a block and blade foresight, adjustable rear sight, steel butt, cleaning rod, forward sling bar & shoulder stock slotted for sling with sling lug. The metal work and wood have ‘3 Crowns’ inspection marks similar to Swedish inspection marks ( Sweden bought many K98 rifles from Germany but we cannot find any record of Sweden using K98 type air gun military trainers). The rifle is serial number ‘161’ and has indistinct numbers impressed in the wood (all illustrated). The rifle cocks and fires crisply.
