Cuirassiers were cavalry equipped with armour and firearms, first appearing in late 15th-century Europe. This French term means "one with a cuirass" (cuirasse), the breast plate armour which they wore. The first cuirassiers were produced as a result of armoured cavalry, such as the man-at-arms and demi-lancer, discarding their lances and adopting the use of pistols as their primary weapon. Cuirassiers achieved increased prominence during the Napoleonic Wars and were last fielded in the opening stages of World War I. Cuirassiers continue to be employed as ceremonial troops by a number of countries. This is an original French Model 1825 Cuirassier’s breast & back plate Cuirass armour. Made of heavy, thick steel, the breast plate is plate is 16 ¾” tall (to the shoulder) and the interior curve is 18½” at the waist. The same back plate measurements match the breast plate. The armour plates are curved to provide strength and the breast plate has a flared waist. The armour plates have no damage or dents and have even aged patina. All rivets are present and the cuirass set has its original leather backed brass chain link straps with brass plates and hanging hooks / studs (the leather of one shoulder strap has been cut at some point in its life but is still present and backs the chain when worn /mounted on the stand) . The interior rim of the breast plate at the shoulder has faint markings which look like ‘2T 11’ (most likely Regiment) & ‘203’ (most likely an armoury number). The Cuirass set comes with its original Victorian era padded silk and wood ‘Torso’ Mannequin stand on which it was found. The silk has age related staining and fraying but fits the Cuirass well and the stand swivels 360 degrees for display. The Cuirass set on its stand weighs a hefty 10.8 Kilos. The price for this impressive French Cuirass set with display stand includes UK delivery. Sn 22910
