An original, example of a WW1 German Ersatz M88/98 bayonet. (Ersatz-substitute) bayonets were made in Germany during the early years of World War 1, because there weren't enough regulation bayonets to equip the rapidly expanding army. Ersatz bayonets were manufactured in local workshops, resulting in hundreds of variations. Our example has a pressed steel hilt, ¾ muzzle ring & up-turned quillon (see page 155, No.344 and page 143 of The Bayonet Book by Watts & White for an example similar to ours). One side of the hilt has a stamped number ‘5955’ (illustrated). It has a 12 ¼” clean fullered blade (17” overall). The spine of the blade has an imperial German inspection mark (illustrated). The bayonet has its original steel scabbard with frog locket. The scabbard is fitted with a well made later reproduction leather frog. The rear of the frog is impressed with faux maker mark ‘ewx’ and ‘1941’ date. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 23484:47 (Box 1)
