This study of British and related Commonwealth bayonets presents a considerable amount of hitherto unpublished material on the subject, and is also different because it considers the bayonet in a slightly different perspective than previous books on bayonets; with a closer association of the appropriate rifle, carbine or even pistol. The importance of this in identification of a bayonet becomes obvious when considering certain points which are covered in this book. The first mention of bayonets in military service occurs in the early part of the 17th century- Blackmore, in ‘Guns and Rifles of the World’ quotes a Cotgraves dictionary reference of 1611, to the bayonet as a kind of small flat pocket dagger; furnished with knives; or a great knife to hang at the girdle like a dagger.
