Carl Grasser was a maker of fine edged weapons, including hunting knives and swords, in Vienna, Austria, particularly around the turn of the 20th century (late 19th / early 20th century). This is an excellent, original and complete Stag Hunting Dagger / Sidearm By Carl Grasser Vienna. These substantial weapons were carried when hunting large game such as Stag for self defence and to deliver the 'death blow' to the hunted prey and to butcher carcasses in the field. This example has a heavy, curved, Stag Antler hilt with curved finger guard which has an acorn finial. It has a heavy butcher blade which is clean is clean & sharp with no damage to the cutting edge. The blade is 9 ¼” length, 2 ¼” wide at it broadest and the spine is 5mm thick at its widest. The spine has a blued and etched panel with the cutler’s name ‘Carl Grasser Vienna Austria’. The English spelling of Vienna indicates that this was a period export piece for the British market. The dagger is 15 ¼” overall length. One side of the blade has an etched panel scene depicting a Stag in the field. The weapon is complete with its original leather scabbard with integral frog, large belt loop, leather retaining strap with press stud fastener and open top pockets which holster their original steel knife and fork accessories, each with stag antler handles. The leather & stitching of the scabbard are clean & intact with just light surface wear to be expected. The leather is stamped with name ‘E.A.
