This is a rare British pattern 1859 cutlass sword bayonet for the Enfield pattern 1858 5 groove naval rifle. the first pattern was introduced for a short while with wooden grips but was soon superseded by the second pattern with chequered grips. The bayonet has a slightly curved 26 ¾ inch unfullered blade with a slight spear point and an overall length of 32 ½ inches. The top of the blade near the hilt carries an inspection mark. The bayonet is in excellent condition with a clean blade and excellent leather grips. The left hand side of the handle near the release button is stamped with the number 83 and on the other side is an inspection stamp (Crown over 20).
