Description

Largest selection of genuine antique weapons for sale in UK. See our website andrewbottomley.com Ref 3928. A very unusual and rare Dragoon's or horse-mans semi-Basket Hilt sword of unusual pattern. May be of POLISH or HUNGARIAN origin ? This sword is similar to other horse-mans or dragoons swords circa 1720-1760 but has a guard comprised of individual bars and is of rather odd construction and style with a flattened pommel. Original leather covered wooden grip (leather now mostly worn please see photos). Fitted with a strange shaped pommel. Manufactured probably circa 1720-1750? The straight wide (1.5 inches) blade is 32 inches long and is engraved with a cross of Lorraine and Orb and a very interesting shield bearing a family ? coat-of arms, an un-cleaned sleeper. Overall length is 38 inches. This and similar types of horseman's or Dragoons swords are known to have seen service during the American Revolutionary War circa 1775-1783 as well as during the Napoleonic Wars 1801-1815.
