The traditional throwing spear, known as the IsiJula, features a narrow, leaf-shaped blade and a long shaft designed for javelin-like strikes. Warriors would carry several of these behind their cowhide shields to hurl at enemies before charging. The weapon revolutionized tribal warfare in South Africa. A period drawing of Zulu impi warriors armed with throwing spears is illustrated in image 1. This spear measures 5 Feet 5 1/2 Inches overall length. It has a blackened iron leaf shaped blade. Its tang is securely attached to its hand crafted wood shaft. The wood shaft is plain with no decoration and has a metal tube finial at the end of the shaft.
