The .410 bore is the smallest gauge shotgun in widespread use in the United Kingdom, firing a 2.5 or 3-inch shell with a lighter payload than larger gauges. It is a popular choice as a first shotgun for younger or lighter-framed shooters, and is widely used for rabbits, squirrels, corvids and other pest species at close range.
In the UK, smooth-bore .410 shotguns require a Shotgun Certificate (SGC) from your local police force; rifled .410s are classed as Section 1 firearms and require a Firearms Certificate (FAC). The bore is available in over-and-under, side-by-side and single-barrel configurations, with manufacturers including Beretta, CZ, Browning and Baikal all producing popular examples.
Buyers should note that .410 ammunition is less widely stocked than 12 or 20 bore, so checking local availability before purchase is advisable.
