Buying BSA Ambidextrous Shotguns

Shotgun Certificate

To buy a shotgun in the UK, you need a Shotgun Certificate (SGC) issued by your local police force. An SGC covers smooth-bore guns with a barrel of 24 inches or more and a magazine limited to two cartridges. Pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns with larger capacity magazines require a Firearms Certificate (FAC) instead.

What to check

Confirm the seller holds a valid SGC and that the gun matches the certificate description. Check the barrel for UK proof marks — a crown and BNP stamp from the London or Birmingham Proof House. On second-hand guns, inspect the action, stock and barrel walls for wear, pitting or damage. If you are uncertain, ask a registered firearms dealer (RFD) to examine it before purchase.

Completing the transfer

Both buyer and seller must hold valid certificates for the transaction. Record the buyer's SGC details and keep a copy of the transaction. Many buyers and sellers choose to complete the transfer through an RFD for added peace of mind.

Selling Your Shotgun?

Include the gauge, action type, barrel length and choke configuration in your listing. Clear photographs of the action, stock and barrels help buyers assess condition. Note any proof marks, servicing history or included accessories.
