About Side By Side Shotguns
The side-by-side (SxS) shotgun, where two barrels sit horizontally alongside one another, is the defining format of the English shooting field and the foundation of British gunmaking heritage. The finest UK-made side-by-sides are hand-built sidelock ejectors by makers including Purdey, Holland & Holland, Boss, Westley Richards and William Evans, representing the pinnacle of the gunmaker's craft. At the other end of the market, robust working side-by-sides from Spanish, Turkish and Italian makers offer reliable service at accessible prices.
All side-by-side shotguns require a Shotgun Certificate (SGC), and any older or fine English gun should be proof-checked before shooting if its history is unclear. The Gunstar side-by-side classified market spans pre-war English boxlocks to contemporary bespoke commissions, making it worth checking barrel length, choke specification and stock dimensions carefully when buying.
