An original Swiss Model 1914 sawback bayonet and scabbard (see page 272 Item 607 of The Bayonet Book by Watts and White). Introduced in 1914, these Saw back bayonets were issued to specialist troops such as Pioneers or Engineers. The bayonet’s smooth wood grips are excellent and undamaged &secured by 2 rivets. The polished steel pommel has a sprung push button bayonet release which works correctly. It has a straight cross guard with muzzle ring. The cross guard has a small Swiss cross army acceptance mark. The ricasso of the blade is manufacturer marked WaffenFabrik Neuhausen. The saw back polished steel blade is superb with sharp deep cut sawback section on the spine. The clean blade measures 18 ¾” in length and is fullered. The bayonet measures 24” overall. The correct original scabbard is metal with fixed belt bar and has a ball end marked with a Swiss Cross Army acceptance mark. The scabbard is in excellent condition with no dents and original black finish. The scabbard is fitted with an original period leather frog which has a large belt loop and retaining strap with steel buckle. The rear of the frog is impressed with crisp Swiss Cross Army acceptance mark, indistinct impressed cartouche and faint number which looks like ‘38’. All leather and stitching of the frog are intact.
