A mounted infantry were infantry who rode horses instead of marching. The original dragoons were essentially mounted infantry. Mounted rifles are half cavalry, mounted infantry merely especially mobile infantry. Today, with motor vehicles having replaced horses for military transport, the motorised infantry are in some respects successors to mounted infantry. A martingale is a piece of equestrian tack designed to control a horse's head carriage and act as an additional form of control.
