WEIHRAUCH HW77K .177 – EARLY FIRST EVOLUTION / “MK1” – WEST GERMANY – LSD TUNED

A very nice example of an early Weihrauch HW77K in .177, made in West Germany, in the early First Evolution configuration often referred to by enthusiasts as a “Mk1”.

Please note: “Mk1”, “Mk2” etc. are enthusiast terminology rather than official Weihrauch designations, and terminology varies between sources. The rifle is therefore described by its identifiable physical features as well.

EARLY FIRST EVOLUTION FEATURES

This rifle has the characteristic early First Evolution arrangement:

- Sliding underlever catch beneath the catch block

- Removable front sight

- Early-style wooden sporter stock

- 25 mm compression tube

- Early configuration and proportions

The serial number is 1029420, placing it firmly within the early production period.

WEIGHT & DIMENSIONS

One particularly noticeable characteristic of this early rifle is its relatively light weight.

It weighs approximately 3.6 kg, around 400 g lighter than a current-production HW77K.

This is attributable to the combination of the early 25 mm compression tube and the slimmer/lighter early stock, compared with the heavier construction and stock of the modern HW77K.

With the original butt pad fitted, the overall stock length is only approximately 745 mm, giving the rifle a noticeably more compact and lighter feel than a modern example, as fitted with the adjustable it is 770 mm

CONDITION & ORIGINALITY

The rifle retains its original factory bluing, with age-related marks and handling wear consistent with a rifle of this age. It has been maintained with a light application of oil for preservation and has not been cosmetically restored.

The original wooden stock remains fitted.

The rifle is currently fitted with an adjustable aftermarket butt pad, but the original butt pad is included should the purchaser wish to return it to its original configuration.

The open sights are believed to be the original factory items.

There is an interesting “#318” marking inside the stock. I have left this untouched. It appears to be an original stock marking, although I cannot provide documentary evidence as to precisely what the number denotes, so I am not presenting it as proof of factory matching.

LSD TUNE

The rifle has subsequently been LSD tuned, including work to the compression tube.

The result is a very smooth and controlled rifle, while retaining the character and handling of the early HW77K.

RECENT CHRONOGRAPH RESULTS

10 shots using unsorted H&N Field Target Trophy 8.64 grain pellets:

- Average velocity: 750 fps

- Minimum: 743 fps

- Maximum: 755 fps

- Extreme spread: 12 fps

- Standard deviation: approximately 3 fps

- Energy: approximately 10.8 ft-lb

These results demonstrate very good consistency, particularly considering the pellets were unsorted.

A short video is included showing three shots filmed from approximately one metre away, deliberately close enough to allow the mechanical operation and shot cycle to be heard clearly.

OVERALL

This is an unusually interesting early HW77K for anyone who appreciates the development and history of the model.

It combines the early First Evolution configuration, 25 mm compression tube, slimmer stock and compact dimensions with a subsequent LSD tune and excellent recent chrono consistency.

It remains in regular use for target practice, rather than being kept purely as a display piece, and has been maintained accordingly.
