Meet "shadow" - otherwise known as "The Heretic" (for reasons that will very quickly become clear)
Let’s start at the beginning. This particular Weihrauch mark 1 HW77k .22 spent its entire working life on an estate in the hands of a local gamekeeper. It was knocked around, thrown in the back of the landy, and largely ignored. Its condition when it finally landed on our bench could only be described as a "canal find."
But we are always happy to take on a 77. We firmly believe these special rifles deserve a full, no expense spared restoration. Especially an early mk1 on the original spec 25mm internals.
First and foremost, she has been fully armour-coated in H-190 Cerakote Armor Black, right down to the trigger blade and guard. It will never rust, will never scratch, will never require a wipe-down or exterior maintenance. To stick with the zero-maintenance theme, we scrapped the original beech stock (which was well beyond saving) and fitted a tough black polymer stock and blacked-out fittings, making it completely impervious to anything you can throw at it.
Inside the rifle has been fully updated, featuring a glided and buttoned compression chamber, custom glided piston (extensively modified) and high-compression thrust bearing assembly to completely eliminate torsional recoil during the firing cycle. All powered by a British made spring & fitted guides, and running on world class red Britseals for peak efficiency. She's also had one of my famous match grade trigger tunes & polish, it's hours of fiddly work but well worth the effort. She's shooting at 11.8ftlb on Superfields, the glide makes the rifle incredibly smooth to cock and fire, and the trigger breaks like glass.
Now, why am I calling it "The Heretic"?
Well, this is a very early rifle… from our research, only a handful of Mk1 HW77Ks were ever sold. Back in the mid-80s, Venom were cutting down full-length actions, and they proved so popular that Hull Cartridge wrote to Weihrauch commissioning carbines for the wider market. What makes this rifle so unique is that it’s almost certainly one of the original batch from that special order. The actions had already been assembled as full-length rifles, so Weihrauch pulled them from the factory line and cut them down to carbines just before shipping out from Germany. If you look closely, you can see the ‘K’ was actually stamped later on.
This all makes the action a particularly rare and precious piece of Weihrauch history... and look what we did to it! 😬
What you are getting is a rifle that shoots better than a Pro Sport that you can happily leave out in the pouring rain. It will easily outlive its new owner many times over (not to be morbid lol…)
