British Gillwell axes were used by the British Scouting organisation, this 1915 dated example was most likely carried by a British soldier as part of his Trench equipment. The lack of WD marks indicates that this was a private purchase piece. The axe is 13 ¼” long overall. The polished steel axe head is 5” width from broadest part of the cutting edge to the flat hammer Poll / Butt. One side of the axe head has the maker’s name ‘Gillwell’ and trademark above ‘1915’ date. Its wood haft has no damage. The axe has its original brown leather cover / belt carrier with flap cover which has an eyelet which fastens to a brass stud on the body of the carrier. The rear of the carrier has 2 belt loops, all leather and stitching is clean & intact. There are no maker or date marks on the belt carrier. The price includes UK delivery.
