This is a colourful original 38 ¾” x 28” WW2 Japanese 'yosegaki hinomaru' or good luck silk battle flag. These flags were signed by family members and friends of Japanese Soldiers going to war together with messages to bring good luck. The Soldier would carry these flags into battle in the hope that the flag would bring them good fortune and often attach them to their rifles when advancing on the enemy. This flag is made of white silk and has a central red Imperial ‘sun’ printed roundel. The flag has numerous black & red Japanese script signatures. One edge of the flag has 2 original leather tabs. One tab is intact with original cord for pole or mounting to a rifle. The other tab is present but perished with age and is without cord.
