Trench warfare is a type of land warfare using occupied fighting lines largely comprising military trenches, in which troops are well-protected from the enemy's small arms fire and are substantially sheltered from artillery. Periscopes were used to survey the surrounding area, although they were prone to being damaged by rifle fire. WWI Trench periscope with its original leather case. The handle periscope measures: (L 8cm x W 4cm; H 83cm - fully erected), with handle and leather case. The periscope bears the following incised markings: 'Periscope No 2 / R. & J. Beck Ltd / 1918 / No 4890 / (broad arrow). The periscope still retains the majority of its olive drab paint, and the handle is in remarkably good condition. The original thick leather case retains all but one of its tabs. The leather straps are working *one shortened. The leather has a lovely aged patina. An excellent piece of history for the collector.
